Something new for me is combining thick textured blobs of paint twirled into rose buds (using a long bristle brush) with thin paint.
The little work “Baby” Oil on Canvas (40 cm x 40 cm) is in progress. I had forgotten how concentrated each thicker square is as I apply paint to find a balance of colour. It’s just an experiment but already I am envisioning large canvases with bean shapes and more floating amoebas. For some reason I keep returning to this suspended world, it feels like outer space or under water, slow and constant, womb like.
Applying thick and thin paint will bring added three dimension. The deeper ruby magenta squares are turning emerald. I’m excited to see what eventuates!
“Lane to the Lily Fields”, Oil on Canvas (20cm x 60cm) reminds me of the wild white lilies that grew around the Onkaparinga River near my home, growing up. We were in heaven immersed in tall, white, luscious, soft lilies the same height as my brother and myself. This “line” work is a meditation in greys, using thick paint meticulously applied with a long bristle brush. Colours sit in the stillness waiting to be explored. Red fin flash in the river reeds, Lime Poplar leaves fall gently into the wind and sour sobs bloom ceaselessly lemon in the corner of every eye.
I would like to say this is the last “line” work ever….but there are usually many more endings to come and many more beginnings. Yo-Yo Ma Bach: Cello Suites No. 1, 5 & 6 are making this day make sweet sense.
