There is something enlivening about revisiting a book you read when you were 16 or a place that was important years ago. The words are the same, the waves lap as they once did, things seem similar.. but you’ve changed, a later version of yourself stands beside you, a traveler you know so well blankets you with knowledge, there is no turning back, you can only step forward into the new journey. When the baby is ready to be born our eyes are fixed firmly on the moment.
It is now I am looking back to TRIANGLES in my work and the special language they convey. The painting that sung in my head was “Sahra and Starry Kari”, painted years ago. Triangles have emerged rhythmically over many years and now I’m ready to spend the time and delve deeply into their collective tune. From the Trinity to Pythagoras the three sided shape upholds humanity in a way that is beyond our understanding. As I paint I will listen like a servant to it’s gentle message: colour, paint, light, shape, music, soak through my body in osmotic process.
References pop out like a lead in a video game and the landscape becomes entirely new, glistening with promise. Plans come and go washing in and out of my mind as past images twist into new realities.
It is with great delight that I re-listen to Holst’s “Planets”after so many years. How many times have I played “Neptune” on repeat, repeat, repeat but this time it is different again.I am dazzled with images of triangles: shoals of little glass- like light pyramids coming in like Star Wars Ships amongst stars of multiple colour. And when I hear “Venus” I am drawn back immediately into 1998 but it’s not 1998 it’s not even 2017 it’s a gentle river softly flowing, there is no water, the river is light , pure light, made entirely of rainbow triangles in motion. There are no words.
Standing looking at the new horizon, I am ready to move forward into my next future, equipped entirely with my past I am ready for the new . . I can see this body of work evolving and growing, taking precedence, my dreamspace in preparation.
Such a wonderful time to be a painter. Kari xx
